Sport Clubs

Mount Roskill Grammar School Sports Vision

Students will have opportunities to participate and excel in inclusive Sport and Recreational activities underpinned by Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga and Tūmanakotanga.

Sport at Mount Roskill Grammar School

All students are encouraged to participate in sport and recreational activities. Students are expected to play for school teams unless their sport is not catered for. Mount Roskill Grammar School provides opportunities to compete at an elite and social participation level in Secondary School Sport and welcomes new participants to a wide variety of sports codes.

Students can register for a sport using the registration forms below. Additional information will be sent out to students’ school email addresses following registrations. If a Sport you enjoy playing is not currently offered, please contact the Sports Department (sports.department@mrgs.school.nz).

Sports Communication

Information and updates for sports teams is mostly sent out via email to parents and students school email addresses so please check these frequently. Some teams will use mobile phone applications called “TeamReach” or “Heja” as their main source of communication as it can be easier and more instant. The Sports Department has an Instagram Page where Sport/Recreational Activities and notices are shared daily so we encourage parents and students to follow this page (mrgs.sport).

Sport Registration

Term 1 Summer Sport 2023

Archery

Teacher in charge: John Coker (john.coker@mrgs.school.nz)

Archery Club is for new and experienced archers to practice each week. Practices are filled with competitions and prizes as well as couching on how to improve your shooting.

Teams and Competition: The club runs during term 2 and 3. Archery Team is for archers that want to participate in the interschool competition. This takes place Wednesday afternoon in Term 1, with trainings on Friday.

Training/Meetings: Archery Club – Friday 3:15 – 4:45 in Gym 2 – Term 2 and 3
Archery Team – Competition Wednesday 3:30 – 6:30 at Auckland Archery Club, Training Friday 3:15 – 4:45 in Gym 2 – Term 1

Equipment: The school is lucky to have a set of bows so no equipment is necessary, students with their own equipment can use this too. There is a $60 fee for this club to maintain our equipment. The fee is $80 for students who compete in the interschool tournament.

Athletics

Teacher in Charge: Sports Department (sports.department@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: Students are eligible to qualify for any event during the school Athletics Championships. College Sport Athletics Meets are during Term 1, and any students wishing to compete or attempt to qualify for the events should contact the sports department. 

Training: Training times vary for all finalists.

Equipment: Athletics uniform provided.

Badminton

Teacher in Charge: Sports Department (sports.department@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: Teams play in Open Grade and Girls grade ranging from D – A grade. Open to all year levels with matches played in the Mount Roskill Grammar Gyms on Tuesdays and Thursdays during Term 2 and 3. Teams competing in the A grade play on Friday afternoon at Auckland Badminton Association (99 Gillies Avenue, Epsom). Students that qualify enter in the Badminton Championships.

Training: Training times will be confirmed with students who enter into competitions.

Equipment: Players competing in D – B grades are to compete in full school P.E uniform. Badminton tops are provided for players competing in A grades. All players are required to bring their own racquets. The school will supply shuttles.

Basketball

Teacher in charge: Martin Windsor (martin.windsor@mrgs.school.nz)

Our school basketball programme grows and improves every year. Our basketball academy underpins the growth of the sport and is available to Year 10 students for Term 1 and 2. There are social Basketball competitions which run during some lunch times.

Teams and Competition: In Term 1 we run our MRBA lunchtime competition as a trial for our school teams. In Term 2 and Term 3 we have four boys teams (Premier, Open, 2x Juniors) and two girls teams (Seniors and Juniors) competing. Our top sides compete at regional tournaments towards the end of Term 3. Our Premier Boys made the Nationals tournament in 2023 for the first time in our history. In Term 4 we run a Summer League on Friday nights.


Training/Meetings: The out of school basketball competitions run in Term 2 and Term 3 and there are regular trainings at these times. Our within school competitions run Term 1 and Term 4.

Equipment: Correct footwear and mouthguards are compulsory for all Basketball players. Mouthguards can be purchased from the school’s accounts office.

Chess

Teacher in charge: Fiona Burns (fiona.burns@mrgs.school.nz)

We are both a social and competitive club. Everyone is welcome; whether you are wanting to learn how to play chess or already a chess expert. As Vladimir Kramnik a World Chess Champion says: “Chess helps to develop mental abilities. It also helps to consolidate a person’s character, because as it happens both in life and in a chess game we have to make decisions constantly. In chess there is no luck and no excuses: everything is in your hands.”

We have a parent manager, Wayne McDougall, whose unstinting support of Chess at MRGS is invaluable.  

Teams and Competition: Teams are selected for tournaments based on training performance and past tournament results. Students have the opportunity to be part of a least three school teams throughout the year. Teams vary from Top 5 players, Top 12 Juniors, Top 12 Girls.  There is a chess cup for best senior player, best junior player and best girls player given out at the Sports Awards in Term 3.  We compete in various competitions throughout the season beginning with an intra school competition in February.

Training/Meetings: We meet lunchtimes in H8 on Monday and Tuesday.

Equipment: Chess sets and clocks are supplied. The cost for the whole year is $25. Additional costs apply for students competing at national and international competitions.

Climbing

Teacher in Charge: Michael Shiu (Michael.shiu@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and competition: Climbing is open to all year levels, boys and girls with no experience necessary. There are 4 different one day events which take place on Sunday’s throughout the year. These events include Top Rope and Bouldering at indoor climbing venues around Auckland. There is an opportunity for students to compete at the New Zealand Secondary School Climbing Championships during Winter Tournament Week in Term 3. 

Training: Training times will be confirmed with students who register. 

Equipment: Students are provided with a school singlet to compete in and harnesses are provided at each event.

Cricket

Teachers in Charge: Sports Department (sports.department@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: There are a variety of teams and grades for Seniors and Juniors, both Boys and Girls to play in. These range from 1st XI 50 over games to Junior and girls T20 matches. All Boys Cricket is played on Saturdays with Girls Cricket played on Wednesday afternoons during Term 1 and Term 4. Some teams will have an opportunity to compete in Summer Tournament Week. 

Training: Training takes place after school at varying times for each team. Training days will be confirmed for each team at the beginning of the season. 

Equipment: 1st XI Boys are provided with full uniform. Juniors Colts and Girls teams are provided with a playing top however must wear their own white cricket pants. All other Junior/Senior teams are required to wear their P.E. Top with White Cricket Pants. Playing equipment can be provided to students who require it.

Curling

Teacher in Charge:Sheerin Kazemi (sheerin.kazemi@mrgs.school.nz) & Karen Collins (karen.collins@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and competition: Curling is open to all year levels, boys and girls with no experience necessary. Teams play in the Auckland Secondary School competition held at Paradice Avondale on Thursday evenings during Term 2 and Term 3. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the North Island Secondary School Championships during winter tournament week. 

Training: Thursday nights.

Equipment: Students are provided with a school jacket and curling equipment is provided by the competition organisers. 

Distance Running

Teacher in Charge: Sports Department (sports.department@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: A school running club is open to all year levels. Any students who would like to take part in Cross Country and Distance Running events should contact the Sports Department. College Sport events take place during Term 2 and Term 3. 

Training: Training times vary (weather dependent) and will be confirmed with Running Club members. 

Equipment: Cross country singlets provided for events.

Fencing

Teacher in Charge: Jonathan Thompson (jonathan.thompson@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams: Open to all year levels with experience required. Students will have the opportunity to compete in NZ Secondary School Championships. Training and event times to be confirmed with students who register to take part in fencing. 

Equipment: Basic Fencing equipment provided. Students are required to train in school P.E uniform, track pants and appropriate sports shoes.

Football

Teachers in Charge: Madison Poingdestre (madison.poingdestre@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: There are a variety of teams and grades for Seniors and Juniors, both Boys and Girls to play in. Boys games are played on Saturdays with kick off times varying between 9am-12pm, with Girls matches played on Wednesday afternoons at 4.00pm. Competitions take place in Term 2 and Term 3 with 1st XI teams having the opportunity to compete in Winter Tournament Week in Term 3. 

Training: Training will take place at different times for each team and will be confirmed at the beginning of the season. 

Equipment: Playing uniform is provided on loan for most teams however some Junior sides will be required to wear their P.E. uniform. Students must purchase appropriate navy Sports socks from the school uniform shop.

Hockey

Director of Hockey: Jimmy Grant (jimmy.grant@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: There are a variety of teams and grades for Seniors and Juniors, both Boys and Girls to play in. Matches take place during the week after school, Home and Away. Game days vary depending on the team and grade. Competitions take place in Term 2 and Term 3 with 1st XI teams having the opportunity to compete in Winter Tournament Week in Term 3. 

Training: All Hockey teams train on Mondays after school on the Hockey Turf, additional training times vary for all teams.

Equipment: Playing uniform is provided on loan. Students must purchase appropriate Sports socks from the uniform shop and must have their own mouth guards. Students are encouraged to bring their own Hockey stick however there are some that can be borrowed each week. 

Lacrosse

Teacher/s in Charge: Madison Poingdestre (madison.poingdestre@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: There are Lacrosse Boys and Girls teams available for students of any year level to join. No experience is required. Girls Teams compete during Term 2 and Term 3 on Thursday afternoons Home and Away. They have the opportunity to compete in a One Day Auckland Tournament and National Lacrosse Tournament during Winter Tournament Week. Boys teams compete during Term 1 Home and Away and have the opportunity to compete at the National Lacrosse Tournament during Winter Tournament Week. 

Training: Training times vary for all teams and will be confirmed at the beginning of the season. 

Equipment: Players are encouraged to bring their own stick however some sticks are available to be borrowed throughout the season. Goggles and a mouth guard are a requirement for every game and students must have their own. Students can hire goggles from the Sports Department for the season and mouth guards can be purchased by paying at the school accounts office. Lacrosse uniforms are provided. 

Netball

Teacher in Charge: Mardia Te Whiu (mardia.tewhiu@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: There are a variety of teams and grades for all different Year Levels. The Premier Senior team play on Tuesday evenings in the Netball Waitakere Premier Competition at the Te Pai Netball Centre. All other teams play at Auckland Netball Centre on Saturday mornings. Competition runs through Term 2 and Term 3. Our top netball teams for each year level enter in the Auckland Combined Points Tournament in Term 3 with our Premier Netball team competing in the Upper North Island Secondary Schools Tournament during Winter Tournament Week in Term 3. 

Training: Training times vary for all teams and will be confirmed at the beginning of the season. 

Equipment: Netball dresses are provided. Players are to train and play in appropriate sports shoes, preferably netball shoes.

Orienteering

Teacher in Charge: Christine Brown (christine.brown@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: Students compete as individuals during Term 1 at a variety of weekly events staged at different schools and venues in Auckland. Open to all year levels with no experience required. 

Training: Fitness training is to be maintained during students’ own time over the summer holidays in preparation for the start of the Orienteering season.

Equipment: Orienteering singlet and basic Orienteering equipment provided. Students are required to bring their own running shoes for events.

Rugby Union

Teacher in Charge: Sports Department (sports.department@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: There are a variety of teams and grades for Seniors and Juniors, both Boys and Girls to play in, including Under 14 and Under 15 Open Boys grade. Boys games are played on Saturdays with kick off times varying between 9am-12pm, with Girls matches played on Monday afternoons at 4.15pm. Competitions take place in Term 2 and Term 3.

Training: Teams practice twice per week with training days to be confirmed at the beginning of the season for each team. 

Equipment: Playing uniform is provided on loan. Students must purchase appropriate Sports socks from the uniform shop and have their own mouth guard for every match and practices. 

Special Olympics

Teacher in Charge: Debra Shiers (debra.shiers@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and competition: All students who are eligible are welcome to participate with several competitions held through the year including Athletics, Football and Basketball. 

Training: Weekly sessions (in school time) including coaching from Special Olympics coaches.

Equipment: School P.E. uniform. 

Swimming

Teacher in Charge: Cindy Good (cindy.good@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: Students are eligible to qualify for any event during school Swimming Championships. There is no limit as to the amount of events one student wishes to compete in. Swimmers will have the opportunity to compete in a number of regional and National Secondary School competitions throughout the year. 

Training: Training times vary with most swimmers completing training at their local clubs. 

Equipment: Students are encouraged to purchase swimming togs from the school uniform shop and are required to wear a school swim cap which can be purchased from the uniform shop. 

Table Tennis

Teacher in Charge: Aileen Chen (aileen.chen@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: Players compete in Mixed Open teams or Boys Teams. Open to all year levels with no experience required. Teams play at Auckland Table Tennis Stadium (99A Gillies Ave, Epsom) on Friday evenings during Term 2 and Term 3.

Training: Training takes place after school once per week during the season. 

Equipment: All players are required to compete in their own school P.E uniform and are encouraged to have their own bat. There is school equipment available to be borrowed.

Tag Football

Teacher in Charge: Sports Department (sports.department@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: There are teams available for Juniors and Seniors, both boys and girls. Senior Teams will compete in a one day competition during Term 1 giving them the opportunity to qualify for Auckland Championships. Junior Teams will compete in a one day competition during Term 4 giving them the opportunity to qualify for Auckland Championships.

Training: Training times will be confirmed in the lead up to each tournament. 

Equipment: School singlet will be provided however students will need to provide their own Tag shorts. Players are required to train and play in appropriate sports shoes/moulded boots only. 

Tennis

Teacher in Charge: Sports Department (sports.department@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: Tennis is open to all year levels boys and girls. No experience is necessary. The Sports Department offer social tennis opportunities during Term 1 and Term 4 during the week after school. Competitive Teams play on Saturdays during Term 1 and Term 4. 

Training: Training and social playing times are confirmed at the beginning of each Summer Term. 

Equipment: All players are encouraged to bring their own tennis racquets and compete in their school P.E uniform. The Sports Department has racquets which can be borrowed each week.

Touch Rugby

Teacher in Charge: Sports Department (sports.department@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and competition: There are teams available for Juniors and Seniors, both boys and girls. Senior Teams will compete in a weekly competition during Term 1, playing on Tuesday afternoons at Cornwall Park. Junior Teams compete in a weekly competition during Term 4, playing on Tuesday afternoons at Cornwall Park. 

Training: Training times will be confirmed with team members at the beginning of the season.

Equipment: Touch Rugby uniform is provided. Players are required to train and play in appropriate sports shoes or moulded boots. 

Volleyball

Teacher in Charge:Mardia Te Whiu (mardia.tewhiu@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and Competition: There are teams available for Juniors and Seniors, both Boys and Girls. Seniors Teams compete in a weekly competition during Term 1 with the opportunity to compete at the Auckland Championships in Term 1. Junior Teams compete in a weekly competition during Term 4 with the opportunity to compete at the Auckland Championships in Term 4. 

Training: Training times vary for all teams and will be confirmed at the beginning of the season. 

Equipment: Volleyball uniforms are provided. Knee pads are highly recommended.

Waka Ama

Teacher in Charge: Sports Department (sports.department@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and competition: Waka Ama is open to all year levels, boys and girls with no experience necessary. Competitions are held in Term 1 for Seniors and Term 4 for Junior students. Mount Roskill Grammar has a working connection with Ocean Blue Sports Club where we practice in Okahu Bay. 

Training: Training times vary for all teams and will be confirmed at the beginning of the season. 

Equipment: Students are provided with a school singlet and shorts for race day. Students are encouraged to bring their own paddle however there are some which can be borrowed for practices. Students are provided with a life jacket. 

Waterpolo

Teacher in Charge: Cindy Good (cindy.good@mrgs.school.nz)

Teams and competition: We have Senior and Junior Mixed teams for students to play in. The Senior Teams will compete in Term 1 with games being played at various venues around Auckland on Friday nights and Sundays. Junior Teams play in Term 4 at various venues around Auckland on Friday nights and Sundays. There are all so multiple One Day Tournaments in Term 1 for the Junior teams. 

Training: Training times vary for all teams and will be confirmed at the beginning of the season. 

Equipment: Players are required to purchase school swimming togs from the school uniform shop. Players are also required to wear their own goggles and caps.
