Physical Education & Health

He oranga manawa, He pikinga waiora.
Positive feelings in your heart will raise your sense of self worth.

Focussing on the well-being of all students, of other people, and of society through learning in health-related and movement contexts.

In Health and Physical Education, the focus is on the well-being of all students, of other people, and of society through learning in health-related and movement contexts. Physical Education and Health are seen as an important element in the overall development of Students at MRGS. Core PE is taught until Year 10, with two lessons per week which allow students to gain new skills, confidence and enjoyment from movement and physical activity beyond what is commonly offered in New Zealand schools.

Health is a compulsory subject at Year 9 and 10. Year 9 classes attend 4 Health lessons a week for one term.  Year 10 students have 1 Health period per week with their Physical Education teacher.

MRGS is fortunate to have great facilities for our students to enjoy. Three Gymnasium, field, turf and a swimming pool allow students to participate in a variety of activities in a comfortable environment.

The Department is well served with quality teachers. The HPE Staff are passionate about helping and encouraging all students, to reach their potential, acquire the knowledge that is needed for independent, critical thinkers and to  develop skills for lifelong learning.

HOD Physical Education & Health – Adam Wilson

Qualifications: BSc (Honours); Post Graduate Certificate of Education

Experience: I first started my teaching career many years ago in England, before finally arriving in New Zealand in 2005. Since then I have worked at several schools around the North Island in a variety of roles: Head of Department; Pastoral Dean; House Leader. Alongside my school roles I also volunteer as a part of the Auckland Branch of the Physical Education New Zealand organisation, helping to support teachers and promote quality physical education programmes around the region.

Why I teach my subject: I am passionate about all things Health and Physical Education. Just quietly I think it is the most important school subject! As life can become more challenging and busy, encouraging young people to take responsibility for their own well being, and those of others, plus through different experiences discovering something active that they enjoy is something I am passionate about promoting.

It is my dream that through Health and Physical Education we can promote confident, connected, lifelong learners who are actively involved and ready to contribute to their own communities. Having the opportunity to work alongside students to be able to recognise and take action to enhance their own wellbeing, and unleash a curiosity about how we can improve our own performance, whether that be in the classroom, work place, or even through sport and recreational activities is pretty energising and inspiring.

Why I teach at MRGS: MRGS appealed to me as a really diverse school that works hard to empower people and serve its community. As a recent arrival here it has been really clear to me that all that I had known before was accurate because I have never worked in a school where everybody shows such care and support for each other. It truly is an awesome school community to be a part of, and I look forward to contributing to this community and empowering students to be the best that they can be.

Subject I’m studying: I’m studying Health and PE

Why am I studying this Subject: I am taking Physical Education because how the body works and how we can improve our well being intrigues me and this sparked my interests in also taking Health.

What this subject offers me: Physical Education and Health has given me the skills and dispositions to be positive towards my own well being. It has helped me grow in key areas in preparation for university and daily life, such as to critically analyse my work and situations. This has widened my knowledge and helped me develop an open mind about many things including my lifestyle outside of school.

Why do I love this subject: The list could go on but a few key reasons are the quality of the teachers and facilities, how welcoming the department is and the way the teachers put time and effort to get to know their students. The teachers encourage, value, engage and support me through sports and new opportunities. This has confirmed my plans to go on to study sports and recreation at Auckland University.
